This page was inspired by Adrien Aubourg's "Joy Theme" page on the Debian Wiki.

Allotrion refers to the default theming of SprezzOS through at least SprezzOS 2.

— Plato's Republic, 606b

— Acts 7:6

"The study on Coca was an allotrion which I was eager to conclude.’” — Sigmund Freud

Idea

SprezzOS is a distribution for servers, programmers, and power users. Powerful desktops with large (but not necessarily high-DPI) raster displays, displaying multiple text-intensive windows, are our sweet spot for interactive use. Three main ideas ought be embodied in our art:

  • The eager embrace of powerful technology,
  • The struggle of man against society, and
  • Mystique

We will work exclusively in dark themes. Except for possibly during the boot process, our theme ought be chromatically minimalist, uncluttered, and subdued.

Coloring

The bottommost layer of interactive displays, whether CLI or GUI, is to be black, because black is the color of origins and endings.

"And Lo, for the Earth was empty of Form, and void.

And Darkness was all over the Face of the Deep.
And We said:

'Look at that fucker Dance.'”
— David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest

"Fiat lux."
— Genesis 1:1

SprezzOS's colors are purple and green.

Guidelines

Our theme ought facilitate reading text for many consecutive hours by maintaining contrast ratio targets (see WCAG 2.0 G18). Hues ought be selected so as not to exacerbate color blindness issues; this has the side benefit of robustness in the face of certain color errors in the display.
